HOW BREAST IMPLANTS ARE ADVANCING THEIR TECHNOLOGY
A company based in Florida and Belgium is working on a new kind of silicone breast implant that will surely spark new innovations by breast implant manufacturers.
The futuristic silicone implants by Establishment Labs
Establishment Labs is working on a new silicone breast implant that uses a microchip to diagnose problems with the implant once it has been placed.
The Florida and Belgium-based company Establishment Labs has created a new silicone breast implant embedded with a radio frequency identification (RFID) microchip. The implant is said to allow surgeons to obtain information about its current status using a simple hand-held scanner – an implant’s serial number, manufacturer name and even information on its condition can then be read by the doctor.
The future of the breast implant
The new embedded implants by Establishment Labs are not set to hit the US market quite yet, but an innovation such as these is sure to soon spark several new developments for breast implants. However, it is important that any new breast implant is thoroughly tested for safety by the FDA before receiving approval for breast augmentation use in the United States.
Currently, cosmetic surgeons in the United States offer patients the FDA approved saline and silicone gel implants in a variety of shapes and sizes, which, taken together, have been more than enough to keep breast augmentation ranked as the top procedure in the country seven years running.
