Lumenis Joins Fight Against Preventable Blindness in Africa

Lumenis, maker of the aesthetic laser device used for the popular Active FX and Deep FX skin resurfacing treatments, is teaming up with non-profits in Africa to help eliminate preventable blindness.

The new Lumenis SLT technology has the potential to dramatically change the treatment of glaucoma in Africa and other developing countries. A ten-minute procedure with Lumenis SLT can be effective in reducing intraocular pressure, halting the progression of glaucoma blindness.

“Glaucoma is responsible for up to 20% of the preventable blindness cases in Africa, yet there is less than one ophthalmic surgeon per one million inhabitants across the continent,” said Dr. Kate Coleman, an ophthalmic surgeon and founder of the non profit group Right to Sight.
