What Not To Do After Botox

Many of our patients seek out Botox to lessen the appearance of aging and wrinkling skin. Whether it be worry lines, frown lines, or crow’s feet—Botox has an amazing ability to target and improve the appearance of fine lines and more severe creases. Intimidating to some, at Tulsa Surgical Arts, we strive to help you understand your Botox treatment as well as provide detailed before and after care. One question we are often asked is, “what can and can I not do post Botox?”

We have compiled a list of 3 activities that should be avoided:

Most Importantly, No Rubbing

You may be tempted to touch or run the injection site and surrounding areas. Don’t! Although there is no associated downtime, Botox takes approximately four hours to fully settle. During that time, Botox bonds to the targeted muscle. By rubbing or touching the injection, you run the risk of shifting and dispersing the Botox to a different, unintended muscle. Slight bumps, lumps, and redness at the injection site are not uncommon and will go away within the next few days. Also, know that it can take for up to one week for results to be fully.

Do Not Lie Down On Your Stomach

While there is no proven effect of lying down immediately following Botox, most still make a ‘soft’ recommendation that it is best to remain upright for the first four hours. If you do lie down, make sure to lie on your back. As the Botox settles, you will want to avoid anything that could ‘squish’ your face. Correct lounging and sleeping habits post treatment can help ensure optimal results.

Do Not Partake in Strenuous Activity

Try to take it easy for the first 24 to 48 hours. Side effects of Botox are exacerbated with any aerobic exercise. As your blood pressure rises, so does the chance for swelling, redness, and bruising. On a similar note, avoid extremely warm situations like a hot bath or a sauna.

Botox aftercare comes down to common sense: do not do anything that could possibly cause the Botox to disperse to unintended muscles. That said, you are able to go on with your daily routine. As long as you are gentle and use a light touch, makeup and washing your face are fine. Shower as you normally would, just try to keep the water at a cooler temperature.
