With so many fat reduction options on the market, it’s hard to know what is best for you and your lifestyle. At Tulsa Surgical Arts, we know this process can be intimidating. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you understand the differences between three of the most popular fat reduction procedures. Traditional Liposuction, Vaser Liposculpture and SmartLipo are three distinct fat reduction procedures that help many of our Oklahoma patient’s rid stubborn fat and achieve the body that they always wanted. So what’s the difference between these three fat-fighters?
Liposuction is an extremely common surgical procedure designed to help men and women remove fat from targeted areas. Since we know that fat can stubbornly linger no matter how hard you work out or how well you eat, there are many different areas of the body that liposuction can be used on. Popular liposuction treatment areas include the abdomen, legs, thighs, hips, love handles, knees, ankles, neck, and face. Whether it is a larger area like the abdominal region or delicate area like the neck, liposuction is able to permanently remove unwanted fatty tissue by suctioning it out through a small cannula (thin, hollow tube). Dr. Cuzalina uses some form of traditional liposuction almost every day of the week. It remains the workhorse of fat removal in order to get major size and shape changes.
SmartLipo is also referred to as laser lipolysis. It combines liposuction with advanced laser technology to easily remove fat from the body. SmartLipo first uses laser energy to break down pesky fat cells. Then, those liquefied and destroyed cells are suctioned out of the body through a thin cannula. SmartLipo doesn’t stop there. The lasers are also designed to stimulate collagen production within your body, promoting smoother, tighter skin. SmartLipo is a popular choice because it is minimally invasive due to the laser lipolysis and small cannula size. Dr. Cuzalina uses the technology and ultra-thin cannula size for small areas such as the face where accuracy and very fine tuning is required.
Vaser Liposculpture is the most common device used for ‘high definition’ Liposuction or Liposculpture. It combines liposuction with cutting-edge ultrasonic energy equipment to rid even the toughest areas of fat from the body. Vaser uses ultrasonic energy to literally ‘pop’ fat cells and liquefy the contents. Similar to SmartLipo, the liquefied cells are then suctioned out of the body through a thin cannula. The ultrasonic energy also stimulates collagen production and better skin retraction. The Vaser is great for larger areas compared to Laser, and Vaser is Dr. Cuzalina’s favorite device to help in cases where scar tissue is present as well as male gynecomastia treatment or creating a ‘six pack’ for the abdomen.
We can’t answer that question for everyone with a simple this-or-that because it varies from person to person. First off, it depends on what area of the body you are wishing to remove fat from. SmartLipo is best for smaller areas of the body such as arms, neck, face, knees, mons pubis,), and other areas that may also be suffering from mild skin laxity. Traditional liposuction is efficient for most areas of the body including larger areas of fat accumulation. Most people get at least some traditional liposuction in combination with SmartLipo or Vaser Liposuction to at the least remove the liquefied dead fat cells
Secondly, it depends on what kind of treatment and recovery you are looking for. Liposuction recovery for very small areas can be considered relatively easy for a surgical procedure, with many able to return to work in about three to five days. SmartLipo has an even quicker recovery time as a smaller incision is made and general anesthesia is not often necessary. However, any form of liposuction can be very sore for a few weeks with significant swelling if the volume of fat removed is a major amount. The bottom line in general with any technique… more removed = more soreness. Typically, the more removed most often also equals greater changes.
Lastly, it’s important to remember that there is no right answer for everyone. One of the best ways to decide which procedure is best for you is to discuss your goals and concerns in your private consultation with Dr. Angelo Cuzalina. As a board certified cosmetic surgeon, he can give you his recommendation and accurately inform you on what you can expect from your treatment.
