About Ear Surgery

Ears that stick outward and protrude, look asymmetrical or misshapen, or appear oversized can impact your self-esteem, especially at a younger age. Ear reshaping surgery (also known as otoplasty) is a cosmetic treatment that helps reshape, resize, and reposition the ears so they appear more proportionate. It can also help patients who want to reduce the size of their ear lobes or treat ear gauge damage. Located in Tulsa, OK, Dr. Angelo Cuzalina has helped many patients overcome their embarrassment by undergoing otoplasty. If you feel self-conscious about your ears, ear surgery can help you regain your confidence. Schedule a consultation at Tulsa Surgical Arts to learn more about cosmetic ear surgery.

Is Ear Surgery Right For You?

We can perform ear reshaping surgery on patients of all ages; however, the surgery is most commonly performed on school-aged children. Generally, we suggest undergoing otoplasty before starting elementary school. By age six, this procedure is safe for a child. If you or your child feels embarrassed by the shape, position, and size of the ears, otoplasty could help each of you feel more confident. It can also help patients who suffer from a torn or damaged earlobe. During your consultation, we will discuss your medical history and perform a comprehensive exam to determine if the surgery is right for you. If so, Dr. Cuzalina will create a personalized treatment plan.

Surgical Technique

Before your surgery, we will provide detailed, pre-operative instructions. This may include not using certain medications that contain aspirin, which can cause excess bleeding. We may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.

Using anesthesia, either general or IV sedation, Dr. Cuzalina can perform ear surgery in one of his on-site operating rooms. Typically, the incision is placed behind the ear or within the inner ear, which hides the scar. To help create a new shape and natural-looking appearance, we may remove some cartilage from the ear or add it. Patients usually have both ears treated during otoplasty to ensure they appear balanced. After this, we close the incisions with sutures and carefully bandage the ears so they stay protected.

What to Expect

Once we finish your treatment and discharge you from our office, you can begin your recovery at home. Dr. Cuzalina or a member of his team will provide aftercare instructions. For the first several days, patients should avoid touching or laying on their ears. After the operation, you will have some bruising near the treatment area that will fade in 2 – 3 weeks. Pain associated with the surgery is minimal, and you can use over-the-counter medication to combat any discomfort. Showering with shampoo may begin after a few days. To ensure your ears properly heal, we will schedule a follow-up appointment within 3 – 5 days. At this time, Dr. Cuzalina will remove the bandages and assess you or your child's surgical results. Once we have removed the bandages, you can see your results right away. Your results will continue to look better as the ears begin to heal.

What is the best age to get otoplasty?

Otoplasty can be performed at any age after the ears are fully matured, usually by the age of five. Many otoplasties are performed between the ages of 5 – 7. Dr. Cuzalina recommends waiting until age six before getting otoplasty for children.

Will I have a scar after otoplasty?

Dr. Cuzalina makes his incisions behind the ear or within the inner ear to hide the scar.

Are you asleep for otoplasty surgery?

Otoplasty can be performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be asleep or under IV sedation, which is a very deep form of conscious sedation in which you are awake with only a slight awareness.

How long is recovery after otoplasty surgery?

There will be some bruising for 2 – 3 weeks, but the pain associated with the surgery is minimal. You’ll be able to begin using shampoo while showering after a few days.
